AFIM (formerly known as NAIRD), was founded in 1972 by a group of leading independent labels and distributors. Their primary goal was to establish channels for effective communication regarding the issues of independent distribution. They were dedicated to promoting and stimulating growth of the independent recording industry.

It was essential reading for industry professionals --- with each issue featuring wholesale and retail independent music charts, coverage of industry news and trends, a monthly retail profile, and interviews with prominent music industry stalwarts. It was the industry’s most up-to-date and comprehensive source for new recorded product releases.

An invaluable resource for the independent music community, the Directory featured listings for all AFIM member companies in the Member Listings section. The Resource & Reference Guide section included listings of industry associations, newspapers, magazines, newsletters, directories, reference books, business guides, etc.
